What's the first video game you ever played?

Or remember playing?

I always get a kick out of thinking about mine, because there’s two of them and they’re complete opposites: either Unreal (1998) on the PC, a game my dad was playing at the time, or Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse (1998) on the SNES. It would’ve been around 2000 or 2001, I just can’t remember which came first, our home PC or the SNES.

Part of me hopes it’s Unreal because how cool would it be if the first game I ever played was one with a woman protagonist? Years later I would go on to name my first Skyrim character 849 after her!

Oh man The Magical Quest was a great game, and one we didn’t hang onto for very long so it’s like, the great one that got away in my mind. I should fire up my emulator xD.

First me it’s either Excite Bike on NES or Super Mario Bros. on NES. I just remember my mom’s friend came by when I was like, 4 or younger and brought a dirt biking game with him, and I’m pretty sure it must have been Excite Bike. My grandparents had an NES in their basement forever too, so when we visited it babysat us xD.

First game that I have like, actual solid memories of playing… probably Super Mario World and Mario Kart! Legendary games, of course. Early fav was FFVI (Final Fantasy III on SNES) for sure. Oh that Kefka guy and his silly goals, great game.

I think the very first game I played as a kid was on the Sega Genesis. I believe the first two games we had on it were the first Sonic the Hedgehog and Aladdin. The magic carpet level in the volcano still haunts me to this day!

It was either Galxian or Super Mario Bros. on one of those computer consoles my uncle came over with one time. A really foggy memory, it was a console with a keyboard for sure… Narrows it down to ZX spectrum, MSX, NEC PC-8800 Comodore 64 or ColecoVision but afaik none of those had an official Super Mario Bros. port, so probably a bootleg?

The first game I remember playing was Super Mario World on the SNES, that first level with the huge Bullet Bills is painted on the inside of my brain.
Not long after though, I got A Link to the Past and after playing that for the first time had a super vivid dream about it! Ever since then, if I’ve been absolutely consumed by a game, I usually dream about it that night.

My dad brought home Lego Island for the PC when I was around 5 years old and thus, a tiny gamer was born.

Lego Island is truly so good - I think it instilled my love of games that are full of little secrets.

The Lego games are secretly way better than they should be! Especially the old ones like Lego Racers!
